Deputy Editor in Chief
The deputy editor in chief provides support to the editor in chief on editorial decision-making, and is responsible for editorial-decisions when the editor in chief is unavailable or has declared a conflict of interest.
Louise M. Hafner PhD
Professor Louise M. Hafner is Professor of Microbiology in the School of Biomedical Sciences at the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. She specialises in microbiology, biomedical sciences and medical microbiology. Professor Hafner has a PhD and BSc (Hons) from La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. She is also a Fellow of the Australian Society for Microbiology (FASM).
She is a senior member of the Infectious Diseases Program at the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI) at QUT and has undertaken funded research in infectious diseases for over 25 years publishing multiple papers in the areas of immune responses to microbial pathogens and vaccine development. She researches aspects of mucosal immunity to disease-causing organisms including Chlamydia and Streptococcus. Her focus is on bacterial infections of humans for which disease sequelae have devastating effects on our global population. Her work is funded by international and national organisations for collaborative research projects that are aimed primarily at developing vaccines to prevent diseases caused by these bacteria. She has extended her leadership in QUT’s internationally-collaborative chlamydial research with national research leadership in streptococcal vaccine development.
Her areas of research expertise are chlamydia, streptococcus, mucosal immunology, vaccines, sexually transmitted infectious diseases, and the female reproductive tract.
