Editor in Chief

Marc D. Basson

Dr Marc D. Basson (MD, PhD, MBA) is Professor of Surgery and Basic Sciences and Senior Associate Dean for Medicine and Research at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and the Health Sciences. He has a strong background in both basic and clinical cell research. Dr. Basson has previously served as Chair of the Department of Surgery and Director of the Program for Surgical and Biomedical Research in the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University and Associate Chief of Staff for Surgical Services at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center and Professor of Surgery at Wayne State University.  Prior to those appointments, Dr Basson was Assistant Professor, then Associate Professor, at Yale University, where he received his MPhil and PhD in Experimental Pathology. He has also had experience working as an Attending Surgeon at Yale New Haven Hospital (including 5 years in the Division of Surgical Oncology), John D. Dingell VA Medical Centre and West Haven VA. At the latter he was also Chief of Surgical Endoscopy and Director of the Colorectal Clinics during his time there.

Dr Basson has published over 260 articles and contributed to 10 edited books, as well as editing 3 books himself. He also has many responsibilities in peer reviewing, consulting, committees, and professional organizations in surgery and oncology. His laboratory efforts focus on how cell signaling regulates malignant and non-malignant epithelial biology.

The Role of the Editor in Chief

The editor in chief is responsible for editorial decision-making on papers submitted to the journal.  The editor in chief is also responsible for editorial matters that include but are not limited to journal supplements, the journal's aims and scope, the editorial board and volunteer peer reviewer pool, editorial assessment of video abstracts, assignment to published papers of endorsements, and for consulting on pre-submission inquiries from authors.
