Editor in Chief

Michael T. Piascik

SAGE Publishing is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Dr Myers, the journal's founding editor in chief.  We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time, and take this opportunity to remember his commitment to the success of JMECD and the professionalism with which he approached the journal's establishment and operation.  The journal's deputy editor in chief is now acting editor in chief.

Dr. Michael T. Piascik is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences and Assistant Dean for Foundational Sciences at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He graduated with a B.A. from Hiram College in 1973, completing his Ph.D. at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy in Pharmacology in 1978. He then did 2 years of postdoctoral training in Myocardial Biology at the University of Cincinnati. In 1991 he was a visiting scientist at the Department of Molecular Cardiology, The Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. Dr. Piascik maintained an NIH funded research program investigating alpha1-adrenergic receptor subtypes for over 25 years before assuming full time educational activities in 2008. He is currently Course Director for the Cardiovascular System for second year medical students and Co-Course Director for Neuroscience for first year medical students. He also is Co-Course Director for Dental Pharmacology a course for third year dental students in the College of Dentistry. Dr. Piascik has authored chapters on Autonomic Pharmacology, Sympathomimetics, Sympatholytics, Heart Failure and Hyperlipidemias in texts books on Dental and Medical Pharmacology.

The Role of the Editor in Chief

The editor in chief is responsible for editorial decision-making on papers submitted to the journal.  The editor in chief is also responsible for editorial matters that include but are not limited to journal supplements, the journal's aims and scope, the editorial board and volunteer peer reviewer pool, editorial assessment of video abstracts, assignment to published papers of endorsements, and for consulting on pre-submission inquiries from authors.
