Cause of autoimmunity has been unveiled

Posted Tue, May, 23,2017

Dama Laxminarayana, Ph.D., of Sathya Krishna Genomics LLC, has uncovered the cause of the onset of autoimmune diseases. The findings are reported in the online journal Clinical Medicine Insights: Pathology, May 2017 issue (*DOI: 10.1177/1179555717712716). There are about 80 different types of autoimmune diseases which, affect about 5% in the human population. Since 1999, Laxminarayana made series of discoveries related to induction of autoimmunity. These findings led him to suggest that, "due to alterations in DNA, RNA and protein molecules, they are recognized as foreign by the immune system and hence such modulations in DNA, RNA and protein molecules are the root cause for the generation of autoantigens". The autoimmune pathogenesis is initiated by the origination of autoantigens, which leads to the development of autoantibodies followed by auto-immunogenicity and the ultimate onset of autoimmune diseases. There is a lack of suitable therapies to treat autoimmune diseases because mechanisms involved in the onset of these anomalies were poorly understood. In the above-cited article, Laxminarayana describes multistep process leading to immune alterations and unveiled molecular mechanisms involved in autoimmunity onset. The author formulated multipronged approach as described in the manuscript to modulate such molecular and cellular anomalies to prevent and/or control autoimmune diseases. Laxminarayana hopes that such timely and focused regimen and/or approaches will help in developing effective and safer ways to prevent and/or control autoimmune diseases, which ultimately aid in enhancing the quality of life.
